Literal puede referirse a:

  • Lo relativo a la letra (no debe confundirse con literario)
  • Lo que se lee o reproduce "al pie de la letra" (completamente y con exactitud)
  • Lenguaje literal por oposición al lenguaje figurativo (que utiliza recursos que alteran la literalidad del lenguaje: símiles, analogías, metáforas, etc.)
  • Traducción literal, la adherencia estricta de una traducción a las formas de un texto fuente.
  • Interpretación literal
  • en contextos religiosos, la de los textos sagrados (bíblicos, coránicos, etc.); véase también integrismo y fundamentalismo.
  • en contextos jurídicos, la de la ley (letra de la ley por oposición al espíritu de la ley).
