Cubans Sugar Kings

Los Cubans Sugar Kings, también conocidos como Havana Sugar Kings o Reyes del Azúcar, fueron un equipo de las Ligas Menores de Béisbol. Jugó en la International League de nivel Triple A desde 1954 hasta 1960. Los Sugar Kings estaban afiliados a los Cincinnati Reds, y disputaban sus partidos en el Estadio de El Cerro hoy Estadio Latinoamericano de La Habana (Cuba).

Historia

Los Sugar Kings tienen su origen en 1946, cuando el empresario George P. Foster montó una franquicia de béisbol, Havana Cubans, en La Habana. El nuevo club comenzó a jugar en la creada Liga Internacional de Florida, de nivel C. Desde 1946 y hasta 1950 la franquicia cubana consiguió 5 campeonatos consecutivos.

En 1954 Bobby Maduro compra la franquicia a sus propietarios, y cambia el nombre del equipo al de Cuban Sugar Kings o Havana Sugar Kings. Ese club comenzó a jugar en la International League de nivel triple A, como equipo afiliado a los Reds de Cincinnati. En ese club se formaron varios importantes jugadores cubanos y norteamericanos, que pasarían a las ligas norteamericanas en la década de 1960. El equipo ganó la Liga Internacional ante los Minneapolis Millers en siete juegos, en el año de la Revolución cubana que terminó con Fidel Castro en el poder. Su entrenador fue Preston Gómez, mientras que el tanto vencedor corrió a cargo de Daniel Morejón, con un home run en el último juego decisivo.[1]

La franquicia abandonó Cuba a mitad de temporada. El 8 de julio de 1960, después de que Fidel Castro decretara la nacionalización de todas las empresas estadounidenses presentes en el país, la comisión del béisbol decidió trasladar el equipo a Jersey City. La mayoría de jugadores dejaron su país para comenzar a jugar en las Grandes Ligas de Béisbol, mientras que el equipo trasladado, los Jersey City Jerseys, terminó desapareciendo en 1961.[2]
