El Banco Abbey es el sexto banco más grande del Reino Unido y el segundo mayor prestamista hipotecario de Europa. Desde finales del año 2004, Abbey está controlado por el Grupo Santander. Según la memoria del año 2006, el banco Abbey tiene 17.146 empleados en 712 oficinas, € 190.512 millones prestados y gestiona € 205.860 millones pertenecientes a sus clientes.

Historia

El banco se fundó en 1874 con el nombre de Abbey Road Building Society (Banco Hipotecario de la Calle Abbey). En 1944 se fusionó con National Building Society adoptando el nombre de Abbey National. En la actualidad el nombre comercial es simplemente Abbey, y el nombre legal Abbey National plc.

En los años 90 se instaló en España bajo el nombre de Abbey National Bank, pero en 1998 vendió su red de oficinas a la Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo.

El 29 de septiembre de 2008, después de un fin de semana de negociaciones, el Gobierno Británico anunció que el banco Bradford & Bingley, que sufría numerosos problemas derivados de la crisis de las hipotecas subprime, había sido parcialmente nacionalizado, y que el Grupo Santander había comprado a través de su filial británica Abbey toda la red de sucursales y los depósitos de Bradford & Bingley, por 773 millones de euros.

El Santander también posee en el Reino Unido el banco Alliance & Leicester (actualmente en proceso de compra) y está previsto que en un futuro sea fusionado con Abbey.

Desde el 11 de enero de 2010 opera bajo la marca Santander, junto a Bradford & Bingley.[1]
