Un ritual es una serie de acciones, realizadas principalmente por su valor simbólico, que es prescrita por una religión o por las tradiciones de una comunidad. El término "rito" proviene del latín ritus.

Los rituales se realizan por diversas razones, tales como la adoración de un dios (lo que correspondería un ritual religioso) o simplemente para denominar a una acción cotidiana que se repite desde hace mucho tiempo, por ejemplo: luego de levantarse a la mañana abrir las ventanas. Los rituales responden a una necesidad, en el caso de los religiosos para pedirle a un dios mejores cosecha, caza abundante, etc.; o responden a una costumbre como los cotidianos.

En psicología el término "ritual" en ocasiones se refiere a una acción o serie de acciones que una persona realiza en un contexto dado que no tienen otro propósito o razón aparente. El término puede referirse especialmente a comportamientos compulsivos de personas que padecen el trastorno obsesivo-compulsivo.
